Mount Ellen, a 4,083-foot peak in Vermont’s Green Mountains, stands on the edge of the Green Mountain National Forest and extends across Warren, Fayston, and Lincoln. Tied with Camel’s Hump as Vermont’s third-highest mountain, it is among the state’s few summits above 4,000 feet. The Long Trail crosses its summit, giving it a prominent place on Vermont’s best-known long-distance hiking route, while nearby slopes shared with Lincoln Peak are used by Sugarbush Resort. Its name has uncertain origins, possibly linked either to Joseph Battell’s 1903 book Ellen, or the Whisperings of an Old Pine or to Ellen Douglas from Sir Walter Scott’s poem The Lady of the Lake.
