Jackson Bottom Wetlands Preserve is a 635-acre wetland along the Tualatin River at Hillsboro, Oregon, shaped by centuries of changing use. The Atfalati Kalapuya once hunted waterfowl and gathered camas roots there, while later settlement left the flood-prone bottomland mostly undeveloped. Hillsboro used part of the area for wastewater disposal and a sewer farm until that ended in the 1970s, after which a 1980 resource plan guided its restoration as wetlands. Today its ponds, marshes, meadows, forests, and sloughs support abundant birds and other wildlife. With trails, environmental monitoring, an education center, and award-winning outreach, it serves as both refuge and classroom.
