The Mark O. Hatfield Wilderness is a protected area on the north side of Mount Hood in Oregon, within Mount Hood National Forest near the Columbia River Gorge. Once known as the Columbia Gorge Recreation Area, it spans a dramatic rise in elevation from near the river to Mount Defiance, creating steep slopes, plateaus, peaks, talus fields, lakes, basalt cliffs, waterfalls, forested ridges, hanging meadows, and subalpine lakes. Herman Creek, Eagle Creek, and Tanner Creek are its main waterways. Old-growth Douglas-fir, hemlock, and cedar grow at lower elevations, and about 200 miles of trails make it a popular destination for outdoor recreation near Portland.
