Crystal Mountain, in Washington’s Cascade Range southeast of Seattle, developed from a ski area opened in December 1962 just outside Mount Rainier National Park into the state’s largest ski resort. Early expansion and major racing events, including the U.S. Alpine Ski Championships and World Cup downhill races, established its regional importance. Over the following decades, new lifts, expanded terrain, and ownership changes steadily reshaped the resort, including Washington’s first high-speed detachable quad and the state’s only high-speed gondola. Despite setbacks such as a destructive 2014 avalanche, Crystal Mountain has remained a leading Northwest destination for skiing, racing, and ongoing redevelopment.
