Maligne Mountain is a 3,200-metre, multi-peak massif in Jasper National Park in Alberta’s Canadian Rockies, rising east of Maligne Lake in a glaciated high-mountain landscape. Named in 1911 by Mary Schäffer, whose exploration also shaped other nearby mountain names, it received official recognition from the Geographical Names Board of Canada in 1946. Its first recorded ascent came in 1930, when W.R. Hainsworth, J.F. Lehmann, M.M. Strumia, and N.D. Waffl reached the summit. In a subarctic climate of cold snowy winters, mild summers, and severe wind chill, it remains notable for both its rugged setting and its place in the region’s early naming history.
