Lovejoy Bridge in South Andover, Maine, spans the Ellis River at a natural crossing long used for travel between Rumford Point and Andover village. Built in 1868 as a Paddleford truss covered bridge, it is one of the few surviving 19th-century covered bridges in the state and, at 70 feet, the shortest in Maine. Set on large granite-block abutments and enclosed by vertical board siding beneath a gabled roof, it remained in practical use into the modern era, with reinforcement in 1984 for local traffic. Its survival preserves a diminishing example of Maine’s 19th-century timber bridge construction.
