Sunday River in Newry, western Maine, grew from a small 1960 ski area with four runs and basic lifts into one of Maine’s largest and most visited resorts. Spanning eight interconnected peaks, it has one of the state’s biggest vertical drops and a broad network of trails and lifts. Beyond recreational skiing, it has become an important competition and event center, hosting NCAA skiing championships, the Gould Academy Competition Program, the Dumont Cup, Santa Sunday, Frozen Rush, and the revived Bust ’N’ Burn mogul competition. Ownership changes culminated in Boyne Resorts’ full purchase in 2018, reinforcing Sunday River’s place as a major eastern ski destination.
