Catamount Mountain, an 1,814-foot peak in the Adirondack Mountains of northern New York southeast of South Colton in St. Lawrence County, was part of the Adirondacks' forest fire detection system. A wooden fire lookout tower was built on its summit in 1911 by the Conservation Commission, then replaced in 1917 by a 35-foot Aermotor LS40 steel tower. The lookout served through the 1971 fire season, but aerial detection had largely assumed its function by then. Standing on private land, the tower was later removed in the early 1980s.
