Fort Noble Mountain, a 2,310-foot peak in New York’s Adirondacks near Nobleboro, became part of the region’s early fire detection network in 1910 when a 30-foot wooden lookout tower was built on its summit. In 1916, that tower was replaced by a 50-foot Aermotor LL25 steel tower, a lighter design that initially used an exterior ladder before interior wooden steps were added in 1918 or 1919. Fire lookout operations ended in 1978. The tower was later removed as unnecessary and non-conforming within the Fort Noble Primitive Area, helping open the way for the land’s reclassification as Wilderness.
