James Peak is a 13,271-foot summit on the Continental Divide in north central Colorado’s Front Range, within the James Peak Wilderness and Arapaho and Roosevelt national forests. About 5.2 miles east-southeast of Winter Park, it forms the meeting point of Clear Creek, Gilpin, and Grand counties and is the highest point in Gilpin County. Named for botanist Edwin James of Major Stephen H. Long’s 1820 expedition, the mountain also honors the first known climber of Pikes Peak. Its broad south slope draws hikers, while its steep east face holds technical snow couloirs, making it a notable destination for both summer hiking and winter mountaineering.
