Death Canyon in Grand Teton National Park is a glacially carved canyon above Phelps Lake in northwestern Wyoming, formed as glaciers retreated around 15,000 years ago and left a broad U-shaped valley. Phelps Lake at its base was created by the same glacial activity, linking the lake basin and canyon as one landscape. The Death Canyon Trail follows the canyon to Fox Creek Pass, beyond which lies the Death Canyon Shelf, a narrow, level plateau above the steep valley. Near tree line, whitebark pine grows here, and the historic Death Canyon Barn, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1998, remains a notable human landmark.
