Viento State Park occupies the south bank of the Columbia River in the Columbia River Gorge near Hood River, within the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area. Administered by the Oregon Parks and Recreation Department, it was named for the former Viento railroad station, whose name was formed from parts of the surnames of Henry Villard, William Endicott, and Tolman, figures connected to railroad and finance interests. The park offers river access, hiking routes into the gorge, a seasonal full-service campground, and a day-use area. Windsurfing and kiteboarding also draw visitors, while Interstate 84 and the Union Pacific Railroad underscore the gorge's long role as a travel corridor.
