Mount Kearsarge is an isolated monadnock in central New Hampshire, spanning Wilmot and Warner, with its slopes and summit protected by state forest and parks. Its open top, kept bare since a 1796 forest fire, offers unusually wide views and is marked by a fire tower. Though not one of the state’s tallest mountains, its strong prominence makes it a dominant landmark, and its waters flow through tributaries into the Merrimack River system and the Gulf of Maine. A popular hiking destination, it is the high point of the 75-mile Sunapee-Ragged-Kearsarge Greenway and holds enduring ties to local tradition, regional place-names, and Colby-Sawyer College’s Mountain Day hike.
