Provo Canyon in northern Utah links Utah Valley with Heber Valley and the Uinta Basin through the Wasatch Range, following the course carved by the Provo River. Long used by the Timpanogos Utes, it became an important route for Mormon settlement after 1849, with a wagon road completed in 1858 and later developed into U.S. Route 189. The canyon also grew into a center of engineering, industry, and water development through Nunn's Station and Deer Creek Reservoir. Recreation and tourism later flourished at places such as Vivian Park, Sundance, and Bridal Veil Falls, even as avalanches repeatedly brought danger and loss.
