Avalon created the September 11 Memorial Plaza as a sculptural place for pause and reflection to honor the memory of the lives lost on September 11, 2001. Its central steel beam was salvaged from the wreckage of the World Trade Center and rises 9'-11" above the plaza, angled 9 degrees, 11 minutes toward Manhattan. A sloping wall sits 9'-11" from the center of the beam and represents the ebb and flow of life, love and water, while bronze shadow medallions depict the timeline of the major events of that day and correspond with the shadow pattern cast by the beam every September 11. The attacks killed all 42 passengers and crew members of United Flight 93 in Pennsylvania, 125 civilian and military personnel at the Pentagon along with all 64 passengers and crew members on American Flight 77, and 2,752 people at the World Trade Center, including passengers and crew of American Flight 11 and United Flight 175. On the morning of September 11, 2001, hijacked American Airlines Flight 11 struck the North Tower at 8:46 a.m., hijacked United Airlines Flight 175 struck the South Tower at 9:03 a.m., hijacked American Airlines Flight 77 struck the Pentagon at 9:37 a.m., the South Tower collapsed at 9:59 a.m., hijacked United Airlines Flight 93 crashed in Shanksville, Pennsylvania, at 10:03 a.m., and the North Tower collapsed at 10:28 a.m. After the attacks, emergency services personnel from around the country, including Avalon first responders, mobilized to Ground Zero and spent days assisting in search and rescue and ultimately recovery. The beam weighs over 1,800 pounds, is anchored by a concrete footing weighing more than 3 tons, was obtained by Avalon from the Port Authority of NY & NJ, and was presented to the public on September 11, 2011, after which the design process for the memorial began. One World Trade Center, built as part of the vow to rebuild, has 104 stories and rises 1,776 feet to the top of its spire.
