Redfish Lake is a high alpine glacial lake in central Idaho, the largest in the Sawtooth National Recreation Area and one of the region’s best-known recreation destinations. About five miles south of Stanley, it lies at 6,547 feet in a narrow mountain basin beneath peaks including Mount Heyburn and Grand Mogul. Its name comes from sockeye salmon that once returned in such numbers that the water appeared red during spawning season, though few wild fish now survive the inland route past hydroelectric dams. The lake remains protected and lightly developed, with Forest Service facilities, a seasonal lodge and marina, trails, campgrounds, and a summer ferry supporting access.
