Ohio's petroleum industry began in southeastern Ohio in 1814 near the village of South Olive, when a well drilled for brine in an area known for underground salt water struck oil as well, sending it about 30 feet into the air. The oil was soon used for lighting lamps, and by 1820 oil was being commercially produced in Washington County and sold for lighting and medicinal purposes. Petroleum products included Seneka Oil, regarded as a remedy for rheumatism, and liniments such as Mexican Mustang. In 1860, when oil was found to be an excellent lubricant, its price rose to $28 a barrel. By the 1900's, wells were being drilled across the southeastern area to depths of 2,000 feet.
