Goat Rocks Wilderness is a protected mountain landscape in Washington’s Cascade Range, centered on the rugged Goat Rocks and spanning parts of the Okanagan–Wenatchee and Gifford Pinchot national forests. It preserves the eroded remains of an ancient volcano, with high peaks, glaciers on cooler slopes, and river headwaters descending to Packwood Lake. Its protection evolved from a primitive area established in 1931, through later expansions and wilderness designation under the 1964 Wilderness Act, with further enlargement in 1984. The area is also a prominent stretch of the Pacific Crest Trail and is valued for its striking volcanic terrain, glaciation, and long conservation history.
