Built in 1861 as a Universalist Church in the Greek Revival style, Green Mountain Hall passed from its congregation to the Green Mountain Club as membership declined toward the end of the 19th century, then to the town in 1909 when the association disbanded. During the ensuing years, the building hosted town meetings, plays, dances, and basketball games, and additions including a large stage at the back and a porch and vestibule at the front changed its original Greek Revival character into what is now termed Vermont Vernacular. In 1973, the Board of Selectmen leased the building to the Whitingham Historical Society.
