Nooksack Falls, on the North Fork of the Nooksack River in Washington, funnels the river through a narrow valley before it plunges 88 feet into a deep rocky canyon. The falls are closely connected to the mining history of eastern Whatcom County, where late 19th-century mineral discoveries and the Lone Jack Claim of 1897 helped drive the Mount Baker Mining District, with more than 5,000 claims filed between 1890 and 1937. The site also supported industrial power needs: the nearby Great Excelsior Mine first used water power for its mill, and after a 1914 rebuild received electricity from the Nooksack Falls Powerplant. The falls also appeared in The Deer Hunter.
