Dorothy Madden Hobson, born in 1905 and a native of Parke County, Indiana, served as Chief Naturalist at Turkey Run State Park and as a Naturalist-Guide at Clifty Falls State Park and McCormick's Creek State Park in the 1940s. She spent the summers of 1947 through 1950 studying tropical birds in Central America. In 1950, she became the first woman elected President of the Indiana State Audubon Society. A graduate of Butler University and Columbia University who also studied ornithology at Cornell University, she taught for thirty years at George Washington High School in Indianapolis. An 11.8 acre tract that was the homesite of Dorothy and Frederic was given to Shades State Park in her memory by the Estate of Frederic Luther.
