Big Moose Mountain Ski Area, in the Greenville area of Maine on the north side of Big Moose Mountain overlooking Moosehead Lake, opened in 1963 as Big Squaw Mountain Resort. Built around a 1,700-foot vertical drop, it once had two chairlifts. Following a chairlift accident and the closure that came after it, the mountain operated only on a limited basis from 2004 to 2010. Its revival was led by Friends of the Mountain, a local nonprofit formed to restore and run the ski area. Through renovation and continued operation, community effort became central to the resort’s later identity.
