Mount Kineo
Nature
Mount Kineo, a dramatic mountain rising from Moosehead Lake on a peninsula in Maine’s northern forest, has long been significant for both its natural features and human history. For centuries, Native Americans traveled great distances to quarry its prized rhyolite for tools, and artifacts from this stone have been found across New England and farther south. Later visitors were drawn by its scenery and geology, including Henry David Thoreau in 1846. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the peninsula became a major resort destination centered on successive Mount Kineo hotels. Today it is a state park reached by water, with trails and a historic golf course reflecting its layered past.
