Big Moose Mountain in Piscataquis County, Maine, stands in the Moosehead Lake region beside Little Moose Mountain and within the Kennebec River watershed. Its slopes drain toward Moosehead Lake, Squaw Brook, Indian Brook, Indian Pond, and ultimately the Kennebec, tying the mountain closely to the area’s water system. Known as Big Squaw Mountain until 2000, it was renamed when Maine changed geographic names using that term under state law. The mountain is also home to Big Squaw Mountain Resort, an alpine skiing area, giving it significance both as a natural landmark and as part of Maine’s outdoor recreation landscape.
