Cache National Forest was established by the U.S. Forest Service on July 1, 1908, in northern Utah and southeastern Idaho, largely from the former Bear River National Forest, and it later absorbed all of Pocatello National Forest in 1915. In 1973 its Idaho lands were transferred to Caribou National Forest, while its Utah lands were joined with Wasatch National Forest to form Wasatch-Cache National Forest. The Cache portion now covers 701,453 acres and is administered from Salt Lake City, with ranger offices in Logan and Ogden. Its former lands include the Mount Naomi and Wellsville Mountain wilderness areas and were once the range of Old Ephraim, a famous grizzly bear.
