Thomas Peak is a major summit in northeastern Nevada’s Ruby Mountains, about twenty-four miles southeast of Elko. It is the second highest named mountain in both the range and Elko County, and the thirty-fourth highest in Nevada. Set within the Ruby Mountains Wilderness in the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest, it is especially notable for its great mass and broad base, which form much of the walls of Thomas Canyon and upper Lamoille Canyon. The peak, nearby canyon, and campground honor Elko High School teacher Raymond Thomas, who died in an October 1916 snowstorm while aiding hikers until rescuers arrived.
