Goosenecks State Park in southern Utah overlooks a striking series of deeply incised meanders of the San Juan River, one of the American Southwest’s classic geological views. Over millions of years, uplift from the Monument Upwarp and the river’s continued downcutting preserved a winding course and carved loops more than 1,000 feet deep, while erosion by water, wind, frost, and gravity sharpened the canyon landscape. The largely undeveloped park centers on this overlook rather than trails, though nearby Honaker Trail descends toward the river. Its remote setting also supports exceptional night skies, earning International Dark Sky Park designation in March 2021.
