Southward lies the summit of Mt. Killington, once called Pisgah, where Rev. Samuel Peters claimed that in 1763 he christened the wilderness with the name "Verd-mont." Most historians instead credit Dr. Thomas Young’s 1777 letter to the inhabitants of "Vermont," sent to Windsor.
