To fulfill a promise made by Don Diego de Vargas, the government leaders of Santa Fe issued a proclamation for an annual fiesta commemorating the peaceful reentry of the Spanish into Santa Fe in 1692. Held each September, this annual celebration is the oldest such community celebration in the United States.
