Overhanging Tower is a 12,169-foot mountain in Wyoming’s southern Wind River Range on the west side of the Cirque of the Towers, along the Continental Divide between Sharks Nose and Wolfs Head. It is significant less as a solitary summit than as part of the dramatic wall of steep granite peaks enclosing one of the range’s best-known alpine climbing basins. The surrounding terrain is sharp, technical, and demanding, requiring serious mountain judgment. In this rugged setting, climbers and travelers face hazards including bears, bugs, wildfire, snow, cold nighttime temperatures, and the risk of fatal falls and rockfall amid rapidly changing conditions.
