Cirque of the Towers is a glacial basin in Wyoming’s southern Wind River Range, divided between the Bridger and Popo Agie wilderness areas. Formed by a glacier that retreated more than 8,000 years ago, it is enclosed by steep granite peaks along the Continental Divide. Named in 1941 after climber Orrin Bonney surveyed it, the cirque later became the Wind River Range’s premier hiking and climbing destination, centered on Lonesome Lake and famed formations such as Lizard Head Peak, Pingora Peak, and Wolf’s Head. Its beauty and technical routes draw heavy use, bringing hazards, fatalities, and restrictions tied to human impact.
