In 1540, seeking to expand the domain of the King of Spain, Francisco Vásquez de Coronado led an expedition of over 1,000 men and women north from Mexico into what is now Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, Oklahoma and Kansas. Searching for the mythical, wealthy seven cities of Cibola, the Spanish explorers found little in the way of precious metals. They also encountered groups of Indians, whom they labeled Pueblos because they lived in pueblos, or towns.
