Sunshine Peak
Nature
Sunshine Peak is a 14,000-foot mountain in Colorado’s San Juan Mountains, southwest of Lake City and just south of Redcloud Peak, on the north side of the Lake Fork of the Gunnison River. Among Colorado’s 53 fourteeners, it is the lowest in elevation. Although it has only 481 feet of topographic prominence and is only modestly independent from Redcloud Peak, it still meets the standard for an independent fourteener. Its significance also lies in its striking local relief: on the south side, it rises 4,450 feet above the townsite of Sherman in just 1.2 miles, giving it an unusually steep, dramatic profile. The peak lies in an alpine subarctic climate with year-round precipitation.
