As a teenager in the 1870's, Teddy Roosevelt visited Paul Smiths Hotel four times and developed his skills as a naturalist, especially his interest in birds. His journals indicate that he tramped the woods and thickets and explored the sloughs and ponds in this immediate area. Here, he documented 97 species of birds.
