South Downs Mountain is a 13,068-foot summit in Wyoming’s Wind River Range on the Continental Divide, within both Shoshone and Bridger-Teton national forests. About 1.85 miles south-southwest of Downs Mountain, it rises in one of the highest and most rugged mountain regions in the state, while Downs Mountain is the 27th highest summit in Wyoming. The surrounding range is known for remote alpine terrain, fast-changing mountain weather, and serious travel hazards. Visitors may encounter bears, bugs, wildfires, snow, and very cold nights, and the steeper class 4 and 5 terrain has seen fatal falls and rockfall accidents over the years.
