Grasshopper Glacier
Nature
Grasshopper Glacier lies in Wyoming’s Wind River Range within Shoshone National Forest and the Fitzpatrick Wilderness, on the east side of the Continental Divide. Part of the largest concentration of glaciers in the American Rocky Mountains, it flows north and feeds Grasshopper Creek en route to the Wind River, sharing a margin with Klondike Glacier. It is unusual for the grasshoppers entombed in its ice. The glacier is also notable for a 2003 glacial lake outburst flood, when about 650 million gallons of water broke through a glacial dam, cut a deep trench through the ice, surged downstream, and became linked to the glacier’s rapid retreat.
